Writing Assessment
Type of writing assessment: Responsive
Purpose: The students will convey a central idea by writing about the author’s purpose from the nonfiction text they chose to read in one paragraph. The students will write a clear topic sentence of their main idea and include three supporting details of the main idea in one paragraph. Student Objectives:
I can show I know the central idea of my book by writing one paragraph about the author’s purpose. I can write topic sentences and have supporting details from my book. |

Direction for Teachers:
1. The teacher will explain to the students that they will be now using their worksheet from the reading assessment as an outline for the two paragraphs they will be writing.
2. These two paragraphs will be written in their writing journal, which will be collected and graded as a formal assessment.
3. The teacher will model an example paper by showing the students how to transfer their ideas from the worksheet to two paragraphs. Students will participate in this process.
4. The teacher will instruct the students to being working on their own writing using their outline.
5. As students are working on this writing assessment, the teacher will walk around and work with each student for a few minutes to ensure they understand all instructions and processes.
