Assessment Philosophy
The role of a teacher does not only include instructing students within the classroom, but it also includes creating and conducting appropriate and beneficial assessment that will help both you and your students. Many students have a negative perception of tests and projects, and a lot of students struggle to see the purpose of such assessments. As the teacher, it is important to show students what the purpose of each assessment will be and to also appropriately create your assessments in order to test students on what is actually being taught during the instructional time. It is essential to not only assess students formally through tests but to also constantly assess students informally through all the lessons that you may plan.
Assessments are not present only for the sake of putting a grade in the grade book, but it provides insight to the understanding of each students and their knowledge. The results of the assessments will show you what your students are struggling with and will also show you what you can improve on as their teacher. Assessments have various uses in the classroom, but the most important part of the assessment is to create an effective one. The assessments tab will provide more information on what components should be considered when creating an assessment. I believe it is important for every teacher to be intentional in the creation of their assessments and to always ask themselves what the purpose of the assessment or lesson plan is. There will be mistakes on the tests you create at times, but as the teacher, you must be willing to admit to these mistakes and omit questions if they were not fair. Students should be able to receive washback and information about their tests results, so they can continue to learn from their mistakes as well.
