What has happened so far in the story? What is the conflict that the pirates are facing? (group discussion)
Turn to your elbow buddies and think of one solution to this conflict. When you are ready to share, please put two thumbs up. We will share our ideas with the class when everyone is ready.

What to look for in students' response:
This type of assessment is an informal assessment. Be sure to watch and listen to each student carefully as they discuss with their partners the answers the questions you ask. Make sure to call on different students to share their opinion.
When assessing each pairs solution to the conflict, listen for the vocabulary words such as solution and conflict. Also, listen carefully to the solution that is being stated. Does the solution show that the student understands the conflict that is occurring in the story?
Make sure to see if students are taking turns when speaking to each other. This will show you their understanding in conversation skills.
